Mostly used on helicopters, although there have been fixed wing examples which include the Messerschmitt Me163, the Messerschmitt Me321 and the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft
where the wingtip support wheels ("Pogos") fall away after take-off and drop to earth, the aircraft then relies on titanium skids on the wingtips for landing.
